Bintulu Information

Once upon a time, Bintulu was infamous as prime head hunter territory. Headhunting was a key facet of Borneo’s indigenous culture for over 500 years but these days travellers need not worry, about Bintulu’s (the ‘place of gathered heads’ in an ancient local dialect) unique ‘culture’. The practice of noggin-grabbing was stamped out to encourage foreign trade when James Brooke arrived in 1841 and nowadays, Borneo’s headhunting customs have been abandoned as more and more of the indigenous peoples embrace Christianity over animistic superstition. Bintulu, today, is a run-of-the-mill commercial hub that houses a number of logging and oil and gas installations – but its rich history makes it a worthwhile tourism stopover.
