Originally named Saigon after the river on which it stands, Ho Chi Minh in the early eighteenth century was one of the busiest riverside ports in Southeast Asia. The Saigon - Cholon port still remains a bustling port with a population of about 6 million. Outside the city lie the famous Cu Chi tunnels – 500 km of tunnels used by the Viet Cong in the French Indochina and American wars.
